Life in Prep School

At Clarendon Cottage Preparatory School, we provide a broad, ambitious and inspiring education designed to challenge, nurture and engage every child throughout their Prep School journey. We believe learning should spark curiosity, build confidence and enable every pupil to fulfil their potential.

Our values are woven through every aspect of school life, encouraging children to become reflective, resilient and independent learners. Through a carefully connected curriculum, pupils develop a deep understanding of concepts and make meaningful links across subjects, recognising that learning is enriched when knowledge and experiences are connected.

Learning is brought to life through immersive experiences, educational visits, workshops, performances and themed activities that inspire curiosity and deepen understanding. Alongside academic achievement, we cultivate creativity, collaboration, critical thinking and character, ensuring children develop the skills and mindset needed to thrive both in school and beyond.

Within our vibrant and caring community, every child is known as an individual. High expectations, expert teaching and strong pastoral support enable pupils to grow in confidence, embrace challenge and achieve their very best.

Reception (Prep 2)

Reception (Prep 2)

Reception provides a natural progression from Nursery and lays the foundations for future academic success. Building on the Early Learning Goals, children benefit from an increasingly structured curriculum with a growing focus on literacy, mathematics and cross-curricular learning, while retaining the exploration, creativity and purposeful play that are central to outstanding early education.

Our spacious and stimulating environment encourages independence, curiosity and discovery. A dedicated teacher and teaching assistant provide personalised support, ensuring every child is known, challenged and nurtured.

Specialist teaching in Forest School, Gymnastics and Dance enriches the curriculum, while participation in whole-school events, performances and celebrations fosters confidence and a strong sense of belonging. Strong partnerships with parents are central to our approach, supported through regular communication, digital learning platforms and our open-door policy.

Reading, phonics and carefully planned home learning activities further reinforce classroom learning and help establish secure foundations for future success.

Infants

Infants

The Infant years mark the beginning of formal education and are a time of significant growth, discovery and achievement. In our nurturing environment, children develop confidence, independence and resilience while building strong foundations in Literacy and Numeracy.

A broad and balanced curriculum combines academic rigour with rich opportunities in Art, Design Technology, Drama, Music, Dance, Physical Education and Games. Lessons are engaging, purposeful and carefully sequenced to develop knowledge and skills progressively, while inspiring a lifelong love of learning.

Reading lies at the heart of the curriculum, supported by a strong phonics programme and close monitoring of progress to ensure every child becomes a confident reader. Mathematics develops fluency, reasoning and problem-solving through structured teaching, practical investigations and STEM enrichment.

Small class sizes, innovative teaching and strong pupil–teacher relationships ensure that every child is both supported and challenged. Learning Support is fully integrated, enabling all pupils to access the curriculum confidently and achieve their individual potential.

Juniors

Juniors

In the Junior School, pupils build on the strong academic foundations established in the lower school as they move into a broader and increasingly challenging curriculum. Alongside core subjects, children develop independence, reasoning, creativity and leadership through enriched learning experiences and specialist teaching.

Small classes and a low pupil-to-staff ratio allow teachers to provide both challenge and support, ensuring every child is equipped to achieve highly. Additional Learning Support and Gifted and Talented provision ensure that individual needs and strengths are recognised and nurtured.

As pupils mature, they take on greater responsibility within the school community through leadership opportunities including School Council, Eco Council, Prefect, House Captain and Head Boy or Girl roles. These experiences help develop confidence, service and a strong sense of personal responsibility.

Residential trips form an important part of Junior School life, promoting independence, resilience, teamwork and personal growth. By learning and living together, pupils strengthen friendships, develop leadership skills and create lasting memories.

Preparing for the Future

Throughout the Prep School years, we are committed to developing well-rounded, confident and ambitious young people. Our curriculum is carefully designed to challenge, enrich and prepare pupils for the demands of senior school education, including a range of 11+ pathways and entrance examinations.

Wherever their next steps may lead, Clarendon pupils leave us as confident, resilient and compassionate individuals, equipped with strong values, a love of learning and the skills to thrive in an ever-changing world.
